Upstairs, they found Jimmy Flynn. He had tried to barricade himself in his bedroom, but the undead had pushed their way. His body lay against the far corner wall. The pistol in his hand and the dried splatter of blood and brain matter above him attested to his last act in life.
Patrick and Mike left the house and walked out to the sidewalk. Another military jet flew overhead. This one veered off to the left and headed away from town. Soon, a number of explosions came from the direction of the plane’s flight. They could see black, roiling smoke plume into the sky.
Looking at each other, they said in unison, “The cavalry is here.”
“The interstate is over in that direction,” Mike stated.
“Do you think they’re doing bombing runs?” Patrick asked.
“Could be,” Mike said, nodding slowly. “I sure hope so.”
Patrick smiled at the thought. Mike walked over next to him and clasped him on the shoulder.
“Let’s get the family up here in the sun and fresh air,” he said. “Maybe things are looking up.”
They both turned and headed back to the shelter. The birds and cicadas resumed their singing.
